In some dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Bielefeld wired Ethernet (10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet) is available [1]. The Studierendenwerk Bielefeld also operates wireless networks (WLAN) in the dormitories Jakob-Kaiser-Straße 14, 14a, 14b and Wertherstraße 160-162, Stennerstraße/ Storchsbreede as well as at designated locations in the dormitories Wertherstraße 148, Morgenbreede 15, 29 and 33!
Depending on your operation system and it's state of update different steps of configuration are necessary. Please consider the aplicable instruction from following table.
Each user must first authenticate to the network to gain access to the Internet. By 802.1x authentication your user data are matched with those that are stored on the RADIUS server. If they match, your access to the network is enabled. Your computer will then automatically receive a valid IP address and other important data relating to access to the Internet from the DHCP server.
The following conditions must be true for participation of the dormitory network:
- You are matriculated at the University of Bielefeld, at the University for Applied Sciences Bielefeld or at the Oberstufen-Kolleg and you have a valid user account (username and password, the matricel number is not an username) for one of these institutions and you know your username and password or you are matriculated at University of Applied Sciences Ostwestfalen-Lippe and you have your own personal certificate of that University.
- At University of Bielefeld newly matriculated students will find their personal user accounts at universities PRISMA portal.
- Your computer has a functional LAN interface.
- The operating system of your computer supports the 802.1X-Authentifizierung on the LAN interface by itself (applies to current versions of Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Android and BSD).
- Dormitories at Morgenbreede, Arndtstr. 12-18, Große-Kurfürsten-Str. 66-78 and Jakob-Kaiser-Straße 16: The special cable for connection to the network is available. This special cable belongs to the equipment of the room.
Depending on the operating system, the 802.1X authentication is configured differently. Many current operating systems (Windows 10, Windows 8, 7, Mac OS X, numerous Linux distributions) bring along all necessary one for the 802.1X-authentication as standard equipment. Further details can be found on the following pages for the different operating systems.
Important security measures to protect your system and your data:
- Make sure that the firewall of your operating system is always turned on before you connect your computer to the network.
- Protect your computer from viruses, worms, trojan horses and other harming programs with an up-to-date held anti-virus software.
The consulting hours take place on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Morgenbreede 2-4, room 1.03. An appointment can be made at the appointment booking site under "Wohnheim IT". The site is currently only available in german. Please bring your laptop and accessories with you.
