- Elsewhere, only the network connection via cable is provided by the Studierendenwerk.
The previous tenant has left a WLAN router
It often happens that new tenants find a router that is not provided by the Studierendenwerk. These are often TP-Link models.
These then come from the previous tenant and have been "inherited", so to speak. There are a few points to bear in mind here:
- The router does not belong to the Studierendenwerk but to the / a previous tenant. The Studierendenwerk therefore accepts no responsibility or liability.
- The router is configured to the previous tenant and must be reconfigured if it is to continue to be used
- The certificate for an Eduroam user is entered on the router
- Access to the network will continue to work as long as the previous tenant's Eduroam user is active
- Die Uni Bielefeld gibt nach Exmatrikulation ein paar Monate Karenzzeit, bevor sie den Benutzer deaktivieren
- Ist der Benutzer deaktiviert, funktioniert der Router nicht mehr
- To be able to log in to Eduroam, the routers must be loaded with the "OpenWRT" operating system (or similar).
- Most of these routers are purchased pre-configured from a private individual who offers this at a reasonable price.
- Routers from this private individual are labeled with stickers that lead to his website and/or telephone number.
- The provider of the routers does not belong to the Studierendenwerk or the university and we do not support their routers.
I would like to run my own WLAN
Many students would like to set up a WLAN cell, also because some devices do not have an RJ-45 connection for a network cable, e.g. cell phones or thin notebooks.
To do this, each resident must obtain and set up a router themselves.
Here, too, there are a few points to bear in mind:
- A preconfigured router can be purchased and operated from the provider mentioned above.
- Contact details and information are often posted in the hallway, otherwise the neighbors / roommates will be happy to help.
- A router (but only certain models) can itself be loaded with the OpenWRT operating system and then set to your own certificate.
- A WLAN hotspot can be opened via the wired Recher/Laptop
- Using an intermediate switch, any router can temporarily (approx. 18 hours) set up a WLAN cell.
- The easiest way to get an explanation and a diagram is during the consultation.
