Network authentication is not working:
- Is the network cable correctly plugged into the computer and the wall console (see General information)?
- Are other residents in the dormitory affected by a fault at the same time as you? If so, there may be a general network problem. Please inform our support team.
- Does at least one LED light up on the network socket on the notebook or PC as soon as the network cable is plugged in? (Note: MacBooks and some other notebooks do not have these LEDs on the network adapter). Does the operating system react in any way when the cable is plugged in?
- If no LEDs light up and the operating system does not respond, borrow the same cable from a neighbor if possible and use it to check the network connection in your room. If the difficulties do not occur with the borrowed cable, then your cable is probably defective. Please contact your janitor for a new cable.
- If the same difficulties occur with the borrowed cable, please try to establish the network connection with your notebook and your user data at the network connection in your roommate's or neighbor's room. If you are able to access the network there, there is probably a problem with the network up to your room. Please contact our support team.
- If you are also unable to access the network in another room, there is probably a problem with your computer. This may be due to a faulty configuration or a hardware defect. Is the LAN adapter activated in your system? Please check your 802.1X configuration using the instructions. Are your user name and password correct and can you use them to log in to the WLAN at the university or university of applied sciences, for example, or to the PCs in the HRZ pool?
- If your access data is correct, but after entering this data you are repeatedly told that it is not possible to log on to the network, the cause may also lie in the firewall/Internet security software of a third-party provider. Disconnect the computer from the network, deactivate this product, activate the firewall supplied with Windows and only then reconnect your computer to the network. Unfortunately, a frequently pre-installed trial version of such an Internet security product leaves traces in the system, even if it has already been uninstalled. In this case, please also uninstall the driver for the network adapter (do not delete the driver software for the device!) and restart your computer. Windows can use the remaining driver software to reinstall the driver for the network adapter when you restart. AYou must then go through the instructions again from the second part.
- If you have checked the settings and your access data, please come to the consultation with your notebook if possible or contact Support.
- Have you forgotten the password for your user name? If so, please contact the relevant departments (BITS, Data Processing Center, IT Officer OS).
- SAre you a student at OWL University of applied science (Hochschule)? Then you will need a personal, digital certificate from OWL University instead of a user name and password. Please contact the S(kim) team at your university location and read the additional information for OWL University students.
Authentication on the network is successful, but access to the Internet is still not possible:
After authentication, your computer can obtain a valid IP address for itself from the DHCP server, as well as the gateway and DNS addresses.Windows:
- Is the automatic retrieval of IP address, gateway and DNS activated in the "TCP/IP (V4)" settings for the LAN adapter of your operating system? If not, please activate this.
- Have you already restarted your Windows laptop? The devices are often only closed and put into sleep mode, which sometimes leads to problems with incomplete updates.
Mac OS: Is 'DHCP' selected for the IPv4 configuration? Is the address displayed in the subnet 212.201.8*.* (correct), 169.254.*.* (incorrect), 192.*.*.* (incorrect) or a completely different address range?
Linux: Is automatic address assignment (DHCP) set for IPv4?
Are only individual applications affected, for example, are you only unable to access the Internet with your browser, while other applications such as e-mail client, system updates, messenger work? Please check whether a proxy server or a dial-up connection has been entered incorrectly in your application for Internet access.
