Informations from HRZ, University of Bielefeld
In the dormitories of the Studentenwerk Bielefeld wired Ethernet (10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet) is available [1]. The Studentenwerk Bielefeld does not operate any wireless networks (WLAN) in the dorms!
Depending on your operation system and it's state of update different steps of configuration are necessary. Please consider the aplicable instruction from following table.
Each user must first authenticate to the network to gain access to the Internet. By 802.1x authentication your user data are matched with those that are stored on the RADIUS server. If they match, your access to the network is enabled. Your computer will then automatically receive a valid IP address and other important data relating to access to the Internet from the DHCP server.
The following conditions must be true for participation of the residence halls network:
- You are matriculated at the University of Bielefeld, at the University for Applied Sciences Bielefeld or at the Oberstufen-Kolleg. You have a valid user account for one of these institutions and you know your username and password.
- Newly at University of Bielefeld matriculated students first have to enable their user accounts at the university computer center (HRZ).
- The special cable for connecting to the wall mounted network jack is present (exception: Werther Straße 148). This special cable belongs to the equipment of the room.
- Your computer has a functional LAN interface.
- The operating system of your computer supports the 802.1X-Authentifizierung on the LAN interface by itself or by an additionally installed software.
Depending on the operating system, the 802.1X authentication is configured differently. Many current operating systems (Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X starting from version 10.3, numerous Linux distributions) bring along all necessary one for the 802.1X-Authentifizierung as standard equipment. Older operating systems can be upgraded with additional software in some cases. Further details can be found on the following pages for the different operating systems.
Important security measures to protect your system and your data:
- Make sure that the firewall of your operating system is always turned on before you connect your computer to the network.
- Protect your computer from viruses, worms, trojan horses and other harming programs with an up-to-date held anti-virus software.
The use of a computer at the residence halls' network without these protective measures may cause serious damage and is grossly negligent!
