Habilitation completed

In January 2017, I have successfully completed my habilitation at Bielefeld University and obtained the venia legendi for modern and contemporary history. A new book, based of my habilitation dissertation, is in preparation for the fall of 2017, entitled: Stormtroopers: A New History of Hitler's Brownshirts (with Yale University Press).


Visiting Professor Jie-Hyun Lim

In the upcoming summer term, I am happy to welcome Prof. Jie-Hyun Lim from Songang University, South Corea, as a visiting professor at Bielefeld University. I look very much forward to our joint-seminar on "Victimhood Nationalism: Transnational Perspectives on Postwar Societies in Europe and Asia, 1945-today"


The Trials of Nuremberg and Tokyo Revisited

Dr Daniel Hedinger, LMU Munich, and I have jointly edited a special issue of the Journal of Modern European History on New Perspectives on the Post-World War II Trials of Nuremberg and Tokyo (vol. 14 [2016], no. 4).


New Book Series in Modern German History

Together with my colleagues Jennifer V. Evans, Carleton University/Canada, and Matthew Fitzpatrick from Flinders University in Australia, I will serve as series editor for a new coursebook series in Modern German History, to be published with Bloomsbury Press, London. New Book Manuscript Completed

I have completed a new book manuscript and submitted it as a 'habilitation dissertation' to Bielefeld University in late June 2016. It is entitled 'Hitler's Brownshirts: Violent Mobilisation and Disciplinary Integration in the National Socialist SA, 1921-1945.'A book edition with Yale University Press is in preparation for 2017.

International Workshop at the European University Institute in Florence

Dr. Gerhard Wolf from the University of Sussex and I have been the convenors of an international workshop on the topic of 'Living Space and People's Community' that took place at European University Institute in Florence/Italy on 9 October 2015. A big thank you goes to the participants and in particular to Dirk A. Moses for his hospitality! A publication of papers in "Journal of Genocide Research" is in preparation.
