The subject of research of this PhD project is the paradigm shift from transactional to relational marketing implemented on mature, saturated, and highly competitive Western product markets in the 1970-80s. Cognitions, instruments, and structures of customer relationship management (CRM) are introduced in economic terms and afterwards deduced from sociological systems theory. The contribution of this work is conceptual. Historical changes in the forms of economic exchange are shown as developmental line from diffusion over differentiation to reintegration. In the dissertation, this three-phase sequence of development is described in detail by the emergence of direct marketing, dialogue marketing, and retention marketing, rudimentarily also by the emergence of interaction marketing, network marketing, participative structures of formal organisation, employee orientation, customer orientation, individualised benefit, and local self-regulation.
