Dafydd Gibbon: Guangzhou Prosody Lectures 2018

Notice: Summer School in Germany, 2019

Jinan University and the University of Mannheim, Germany, are starting a new cooperation and exchange programme in 2019. JNU students are welcome to apply for admission to the Summer School organised by the University of Mannheim in June-July 2019. Further information is contained in the Summer School slides.
Mannheim is an excellent location for travel to various destinations (direct high speed train to Paris, Milan, Berlin, Hamburg...) and participants often use their weekends to explore Europe.
Additional information: Housing in a shared apartment in Mannheim averages at about 350€ per month. Students will probably need about another 350€ to cover expenses for food and local public transport, therefore a total estimate (including 250€ registration fee) would be approximately 950 to 1000 Euros.

Objectives

The objectives of the courses, which are similar but with different levels for first and second years, are:
  1. to introduce the domain of prosody, the 'music of speech', and the methods used for describing it;
  2. to introduce the melodies of speech, their phonetic bases (articulation rate, fundamental frequency, pitch) and methods of studying them;
  3. to introduce the rhythms of speech and methods of studying them;
  4. to introduce approaches to prosodic phonology and their methods.
