Marcus Kracht:
Compositionality and Literal Movement Grammars
Abstract
We will consider a strengthening of the usual notion of
compositionality, called strictness. We will argue that
strictness conforms better to our intuitive understanding
of compositional interpretation. If strictness is assumed,
it is straightforward to show that many languages are not
context-free and that we need stronger forms of string
composition. In particular we need to introduce discontinuous
constituents. We will also show that MCTAGs and LCFRSs
are also not strong enough and that simple literal
movement grammar are necessary for strict interpretation
of human languages.
